I’ve covered the benefits of responsive design, and explained the power of CSS to change how a site looks and works based on screen size. The next logical question is, “How does the site know I’m using a smartphone? Or a tablet? Or a desktop PC?” Because, in order for the right CSS to be used, something needs to TELL the site that it needs to make itself pretty for a smartphone … or a tablet, or a desktop PC, right?

Think about Legos. You start with a pile of blocks, and it’s only the constraints of your imagination that restrict the number of possible outcomes. Responsive design works the same way. It regards your site as a collection of stuff – videos, images, copy, links – that can be assembled as a desktop display, as a smartphone display or as a tablet display.
